What to Wear: Engagement Photography

How many times has this happened to you?

You stand in front of your closet and scope out what to wear for work/party/date night. Looking at all of your clothing options can get overwhelming, THEN you must coordinate an outfit with your other half that will not totally clash with your savvy style!!! Figuring out what to wear on a daily basis is frustrating, picking outfits for an engagement photo session can make you crazy and be intimidating, so…. we want to share with you our tips for finding the perfect outfits for your Engagement session!

1. Each of you pick one casual outfit and one dressy outfit. This gives you some options for different images. Think of what you would wear for an everyday outfit. What would you wear for a fun night on the town? Bring both of those to your shoot!

2. Match you outfit to the current season. Wearing a summer dress when it’s snowing outside may look a tad strange. This will allow for us to utilize the natural scenery and won’t make you look out of place.

3. Wear solids, incorporating splashes of color into your photo shoot wardrobe.  The bright splashes of colors that “pop” and give life to your photos could be bright red, aqua blue or sunshine yellow (just some examples).

4. Be wary of clothing with very busy patterns or logos. This can be distracting in your images and pulls the focus from you to the clothing itself. Your engagement session is not the best time to advertise for a local bar that you and your fiancé frequent or display which MLB team you will be rooting for this spring.

5. Keeping the patterns light and small can complement your photo shoot wardrobe! Think small dots, checkers or floral patterns. Also remember: Animal print can be used if not overdone!

6. Accessories are your friend. Accessories are a great way to add pops of color or texture to your engagement photos!  These can be hats, ties, jewelry or even scarfs. We always recommend that the bride gets a manicure as we will be photographing her new rock and want to make sure her hands are prepped and ready for their close up!

Hair & Makeup: We highly recommend to have your hair and makeup done by a professional! You will have these images for a long time and will possibly be displaying them either in your home, at the wedding, or both. Professional hair and makeup pampers you and keeps you looking your absolute best for your photos! Also this is a great way to try out a pro before you book them for your wedding!

Living in or near the Toledo area? We highly recommend the extremely talented pros Makeup by Amy Lewis and Jenelle Ahmad for Hair & Makeup. These ladies know their stuff and have worked with countless brides to beautify them for their special days!

For The Guys: This is about the two of you! That means you too groom! Complementing colors are a must. Don’t be afraid to dress it up a little bit; if your bride is wearing a classy cocktail dress, wear a pair of dress pants, nice shoes and a sport coat. Layers are great! Adding a nice sweater or vest will help make your pictures look awesome! And lastly, don’t forget to shave or trim that beard!

At The End Of The Day: Don’t stress out too much about your outfits. We want you to feel comfortable and look like yourselves in your photos. Keep in mind that super tight or bunchy clothing doesn’t help your shape. You will most likely be standing, sitting, walking/moving and if you can’t move comfortably, your images will show that you are completely uncomfortable. We also don’t recommend that you go out on a shopping spree and purchase the whole spring collection at New York & Co. We are sure that you can piece together something fabulous from articles of clothing that you already have. If you must have something new for your shoot, try to grab a piece that will go well with other outfits that you already have. And remember, Have Fun!!
