The Real Truth Behind The Knot and other Wedding Planning Sites

If you’re a woman, you’ve probably been waiting your whole life for the moments of your love getting down on one knee and asking you to be his forever. It’s a dreamy scene that propels you into this sphere of wedding planning which can be chaotic and stressful.

In comes the “every couple’s bible for planning their own wedding”: The Knot/Wedding Wire/Zola (etc)!!!

These are wedding planning sites that are designed to help real couples through all of the ups, downs, questions, should’s and should nots of pulling off what is usually the largest party that they will ever host in their entire lives; and doing it in a trendy, fashionable and unique way – because who wants to have a copy-cat version of their BFF’s wedding from last year?????

So you sign up, customize your profile, even create your own person Wedding Website and start searching for the perfect team to help you. This is what these sites are known for: being the go-to in finding the most perfect wedding professionals that are experienced and can work together to give you and your fiancé that dream wedding that makes your Pinterest board jealous.

And, it’s completely free for wedding couples to use!!!

But, here’s the truth:

While these sites may have been created to help couples trudge through the wedding planning process; on the back end, they have become these weird clubs where the memberships for wedding vendors are not consistent, pricing models are a joke and those that “pay to play” get the front end links whether they are the best in the wedding industry or not.

There is no vetting – if you pay the premium membership, you’ll be listed as a top wedding vendor and can be pushed to the front page and can even acquire a featured status!!!!

What does this “advertising” cost the wedding vendor? It can cost $100’s of dollars a month with no guarantee that any quality wedding couple leads will contact them. Websites like the Knot promise vendors that they will receive X number of wedding leads based on market research for their area. The times that we have talked with representatives from these sites, they push just a few “spots” left for featured vendors and assure you that although you can get a few contacts from potential clients, the real numbers come from being on the top of the list. Over the years, the cost of subscriptions to The Knot and Wedding Wire have gone up with no prioritization of the best in the industry (we’ll touch on those awards later!).

Another reason that wedding professionals have stopped using The Knot & Wedding Wire for advertising purposes is that the monthly fees to be featured on the site are not based on a flat rate model: vendors will pay as much as these companies can squeeze out of them. For example: we have talked with various vendors in our market and none of the DJ’s or photographers are being charged the same monthly fee! The more you pay per month, the higher your featured listing is ranked. In our opinion, this is not serving the wedding vendor community and only serves to hurt and jade our industry’s leaders.

Zola offers free Wedding Websites for couples who sign up and couples can choose to interact with their potential vendors. Zola also states that it is free to sign up for the vendors as well (which is true) but then bait wedding vendors into subscriptions. Here is how this model works: the vendor signs up and gets points for free: these are used to interact with potential clients. Then when the vendor’s points are gone, wedding couples are still able to reach out to the vendor and Zola is allowing this connection through the wedding couple side of the site. The wedding vendor receives their message but cannot respond to them unless they pay up and subscribe – leaving the wedding client thinking that vendor ghosted them.

This “Pay to Play” concept can also happen when vendors create their Preferred lists. These vendors are not giving wedding couples any vendor business information who has not paid their fee to be listed. Let me be clear: not all Vendors who have preferred list do this, but they are out there.

But this vendor your interested in has been awarded “Best of the Knot” – shouldn’t they be good???

Wedding Planning sites like The Knot and Wedding Wire offer vendors to receive awards for receiving reviews. Once a vendor receives a certain number (we’ve never focused on these awards ourselves so not sure the actual number), then they are awarded “BEST OF” status. These vendors may have paid thousands in advertising to the site, but there have been some merging of The Knot and Wedding Wire over the past few years and now vendors have to pay to receive their reward/plaque.

That is a ridiculous concept to us. These awards should be given without any other fee because of the work that vendor has put into trying to get clients to review them.

This is not to say that lots of the vendors who receive the BEST OF awards are not worthy – far from that! Our hope is someday they won’t have to pay for the award and recognition that they worked so hard to get. There should be industry change within these sites.

So what should newly engaged couples do to find their wedding vendors???

The Toledo Country Club

Well, planning a wedding almost always starts with where you want to get married – the Venue.

Figure out what venues have your date available, take your top three choices and review the pros and cons. Then, once you have landed on the perfect place, we encourage you to ask your Venue for vendor referrals to other wedding vendors.

Over the years, we have built great working relationships with amazing vendor friends in the industry and are always happy to share who we know that will take care of you along your planning process.

Cornman Farms Elopement

Another best avenue to find the perfect wedding vendors: your friends and family.

Who have they used in the past that they love??? What was their experience with those vendors? The great thing about utilizing your friends and family to find wedding professionals is that they will give it to you straight – no BS because there is no incentive for them to share anything that isn’t 100% the truth.

There’s always the option to ask us, too!

We’ve photographed over 300 weddings and have worked with so many great wedding professionals (most of them have been great) but we do have our favorites and by getting to know what the two of you are planning for your wedding, we can tailor those recommendations to fit your wedding style.

Local Venue owned wedding shows & open houses are where its at!!

Instead of heading to a Trade Show Wedding Show – you know the ones we’re talking about – 100’s of vendors and it takes you 3 hours to walk through it. By the time you’ve perused the show, your feet hurt, your tired and you haven’t actually had a quality conversation with any potential vendor because it’s overwhelming.

There is hope if a wedding show/open house is something you are interested in!

Select venues will have Bridal Open Houses so that couples can come and meet with trusted vendors that the venue has worked with. This is a great opportunity to see who is out there, get samples of their work and actually meet the people that will be coming to your wedding face to face. These vendors are hand selected and invited by the venue to help showcase the wedding possibilities of that venue.

We love this way of meeting couples because they are usually smaller, more personal and because the venue has specifically worked with each one, there is trust there that they have provided a great experience for the wedding couple, their families and the other vendors that have worked the wedding, too.

The Mez is a thoughtfully designed wedding venue that has opened up in Downtown Toledo and they are having an Open House on Thursday, February 19, 2026 from 5pm – 8pm. RSVP here!

What’s great about this open house is that it’s no pressure – the vibe will be come, meet with us and other trusted wedding vendors over actual conversations, see what’s available and know that all of your questions will be answered.

We know that wedding planning can seem overwhelming – but when you know where to go, who to talk to and trust, it can make the task of selecting wedding vendors less daunting, more fun and who knows, you might even make some friends along the way!
