How and When to Wear Cuff Links

Mid Century Balfour Cufflinks

Vintage Mid Century Balfour Cuff Links

Should you wear cuff links on your wedding day? We are dedicating this Monday’s post to this fashion trend!

We were out shopping at a antique store recently and came across Mid Century Piper aircraft cuff links! They are made by the L.G. Balfour company that used to make all kinds of aviation cuff links but now are known for their class rings and yearbooks. These were so neat that we had to snatch them up and we got to wondering: When should men wear these?

The cuff link that we are familiar with today did not become fashionable until the mid 19th century. Before this time, men’s cuffs were adorned with ruffles or embroidery and held together with ribbon or plain buttons. During the mid century they became more popular with gentlemen wanting to accessorize their suits even more and adding tie chains, watches and cigarette cases.

Now it is more common to find cuff links when attending formal occasions. When wearing shirts with double cuffs or French Cuffs it is appropriate to wear cuff links. It is important that the cuff link doesn’t overpower the suit but instead adds a more formal touch and polishes the look. Art of Style: When to Wear Cufflinks suggests that men attending weddings, balls and other formal social events should add stylish cuff links to their suits. Wearing them on your wedding day is the perfect time to show off your style. It can also be a great time to incorporate a father’s heirloom set of cuff links into the groom’s attire.
